Simon once again stepped up to the plate to bring you this week’s Sofa Session…

As you may know, Simon is a long-time fan of the velvet-voiced Sam Cooke. So as a follow-up to last week’s A Change Is Gonna Come, he’s performed another one of his favourites; Nothing Can Change This Love.

Released on August 23rd 1962, the song was recorded late after midnight - just hours before Sam was due to hit the road for his latest tour…

As musicians we are used to burning the candle at both ends for the sake of our art! And most of the time it is absolutely worth it… But sometimes you do have to be firm with yourselves and hit that ‘pause’ button.

None of us are robots. We all need rest and fuel to survive. And as the saying goes, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy (and Jen a tonsillitis-ridden girl!)

So this week we invite you all to stop and smell the roses… To take time out from your own busy schedules to check in with yourself. To get some fresh air; watch a movie; eat something yummy and/or just curl up with a soothing cup of hot tea…

It doesn’t need to be much. It doesn’t need to take long. It just needs to make you slow down…breathe a little more deeply...and relax. Even if only for a few precious moments.

It’s easy to take on too much; it’s not so easy to say, “enough.”

So go on… Give yourself a little break.

You’re worth it.

This is 'Nothing Can Change This Love.' We hope you enjoy it.

One of the earliest requests we received was for one of Simon’s all time favourite songs; Sam Cooke’s ‘A Change Is Gonna Come.”

Cooke wrote this iconic track in 1963, one month after he was refused service at an LA hotel. With it he birthed what would become one of the most important songs of the civil rights movement.

At the time it was was deemed an ill-advised and even “scary” move for the talented, young musician. Having first made his name on the Gospel circuit, the velvet-voiced Cooke was now topping the pop charts with mainstream hits such as “You Send Me.”

Changing gears with such a politically charged song was a risk in more ways than one. But Cooke could no longer be silent in the face of injustice and inequality.

The song debuted on the ‘Ain’t That Good News’ album of March 1964, and was immediately picked up on by the ciivl rights movement.

And though he was fatally shot and killed just nine months later, Cooke will be forever remembered as a trail-blazing artist; spell-binding vocalist; and a vital force in the fight for racial equality…

Today his powerful anthem is routinely, and rightfully, hailed as “one of the greatest songs of all time.” And in too many ways its timeless message is as needed today, as it ever was.

In the words of Cooke biographer, Peter Guralnick; “the song is a universal message of hope; one that does not age.”

Marvin ‘Meat Loaf’ Lee Aday broke records and moulds with his five decade-spanning career. And although we didn’t share some of his views on politics or the pandemic, we couldn’t fail to be amazed by his powerful voice, his surprising versatility, and his enduring individuality.

He made the music he wanted to make, the way he wanted to make it. He turned down the first three record deals he was offered back in the late 60s, joining the Broadway cast of Hair instead. He then went on to perform in numerous theatrical shows, including The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and even a production of Shakespeare’s As You Like It!

It was in the world of musical theatre that Meat Loaf would meet his longtime collaborator, Jim Steinman. Their inaugural passion project - the Bat Out Of Hell album - was released in 1977; five years after they first began to work on it together!

During those initial years they met with constant rejection and indifference from the music industry, but the determined and talented pair refused to give up… Today, Bat Out of Hell has sold an estimated 43 million copies globally, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time.

From Broadway to Hollywood, and all the rock’n’roll in between; this misfit turned megastar lived a life true to his own vision and style. This was his legacy. For “when the day is done, and the sun goes down” his inimitable songs will live on forever.

This is our rendition of his duet with Cher; Dead Ringer For Love.

Stay safe. Stay strong. Stay You.

We are not just being modest when we say we were genuinely not expecting it... In fact Jen was so convinced we weren't going to win, that she was wearing an unconcealed acne 'spot dot' underneath her face mask! 😷 (She frantically made an emergency makeup trip to the bathroom just moments before we had the official photos taken! 😂)

But once the good news had sunk in (and the concealer was on!) we were smiling from ear to ear all night long... But what made us so wonderfully happy wasn't just our own award win; but the fact that so many of our friends won awards on that night too. We were literally jumping for joy each time we heard a familiar name being called out... After all, the greatest joys in life are the ones that are shared. And that isn't just something we say; it's something we mean, from the bottom of our hearts.

And speaking of all things heartfelt... We cannot convey how utterly thankful we are to each and every single person who voted for us. We simply wouldn't be where we are without your faith and support. You are what make it possible for us to do what we do, and for that, we cannot thank you enough.

Stay stay safe. Stay awesome. Stay you. ♥️
